Alfredo Ceschiatti

Born in Curitiba, Paraná, Erbo Stenzel was the author of several works in the capital. He became renowned mainly for his sculptures in the December 19th Square. "Worker's Torso" is one of the academic works carried out by Erbo in 1941, during his third year at the National School of Fine Arts. Erbo Stenzel

The work "Untitled (Blue Structure)", by the Bahian sculptor Emanoel Araújo, is an abstract composition. The bent and welded geometric shapes form this vertical object that interacts with the space.

Emanoel Araújo

This work is part of the 'Athletes' series, in which the sculptor Bruno Giorgi started using bronze in his sculptures. Giorgi was born in Mococa, São Paulo, but spent most of his career in Rio de Janeiro. He also collaborated with other sculptor artists such as Francisco Stockinger, who also has a work in the Sculpture Courtyard.

Notice how the figure was represented. The sculptures in this series, called “Athletes,” have elongated bodies and lack many details but are rich in the essence of form. What stands out to you the most in this sculpture?

Bruno Giorgio

The work of Tomie Ohtake, a Japanese artist naturalized Brazilian, brings the materialization of the free and gestural stroke that unfolds in space. This work is part of the 'Lines in Space' sculpture series.

Notice how it is the tallest among all the others. Its long stroke rises like a giant white streamer launched into the infinity of the sky. Tomie Ohtake

The renowned architect and significant collaborator in the construction project of Brasília (DF), Oscar Niemeyer, has works in various places around the world. He was also the one who designed the two buildings of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum.

A remarkable characteristic of his work is the use of sinuous curves, which he related to aspects of mountains, rivers, and clouds in the sky. He used to say that 'the universe is made of curves.' In the same way, 'Form in Space V' proposes a relationship with architectural elements. Can you think of what those elements might be?

Notice that it is formed by two arches that rest on an initial straight structure, creating a dialogue between the solidity of geometric shapes (straight) and the movement provided by organic shapes (curves), resulting in a light work that interacts with the space.

Oscar Niemeyer

It is common to see figures of power represented in sculptures, especially in parks and squares. Think about the personalities you have seen in places you have passed: have you ever seen black women represented in sculptures?

The model for the creation of the sculpture was Emerenciana Cardoso Neves, who, besides being a recognized sculptor, was a singer and composer, as shown by the research 'Crossing in Water for the Hill: The History Belongs to Us,' by the artist Eliana Brasil.

The author of the sculpture, Erbo Stenzel, was born in Curitiba, Paraná, and was the author of several works in the city. Erbo became renowned mainly for his sculptures and reliefs in the 19 de Dezembro Square. The artist presented the work 'Water for the Hill' at the 1944 National Salon of Fine Arts, aspiring to win the award for a trip abroad, but the sculpture was considered hors concours ('out of competition') for having technical characteristics superior to those of the other works.

Notice that, in this sculpture, the artist creates a kind of frame with straight lines for the circular shape present in its interior. Does the shape of the sculpture remind you of anything?

Now, touch the work. Considering it is made of steel, do its temperature and texture match the idea you have of this material? How do you imagine it was made? What production processes do you think it went through?

Walk around the sculpture. Notice how it rests on the vertices of its own lines, the form that is constructed from the joining of three folded and welded metal plates. Franz Weissmann

The duo of brothers Gustavo and Otávio Pandolfo, known as 'OSGEMEOS,' have always lived the urban space as a place of research. Their productions began in the 1980s, and it was through immersion in hip hop culture that the brothers developed their own artistic language.

Looking at the painting in front of you, observe the characters closely. What are they doing? What differences or similarities can you perceive between them? What kind of story does this image seem to tell? OSGEMEOS tell stories – sometimes autobiographical – whose plots involve fantasy, emotional relationships, questions, dreams, and life experiences.

MON's open space was once a place where b-boys and b-girls from Curitiba (PR) would gather to dance. This work is a tribute to that story.

Created in 2021 as part of the 'OSGEMEOS: Segredos' exhibition, it's interesting to note how OSGEMEOS used the reliefs and elements of the wall to create the scene. Notice how the characters interact with these elements.

Gustavo and Otávio Pandolfo (OSGEMEOS)

Born in Traun, Austria, Stockinger migrated to Brazil in 1921 at the age of two. He made his mark in Rio de Janeiro as an artist and was a student of Bruno Giorgi, who also has works here, in the Sculpture Courtyard of the Museum.

Francisco Stockinger gained notoriety with his representations of the human body with an expressionist bias, a movement characterized by quick gestures and loaded with feelings.

Stockinger uses a variety of materials and rough finishes in his works, resulting in some unusual textures. With this in mind, touch the piece and feel its texture. What feeling does the roughness of the piece evoke in you? What can this texture mean?

Francisco Stockinger

The artist from Ceará, Sérvulo Esmeraldo, challenges our imagination and creates an enigma with his shapes. He appreciates the transparency of geometric elements and develops their progression – a fact that contributes to different ways of looking at and contemplating his work from every angle of the sculpture.

Notice the two square structures made of polychrome iron. They are supported by their vertex and fixed to the ground. The figure in a diagonal position seems to gain movement and balance. Are they identical? Try stepping away from the piece. What shape do you see? Does it suggest any volume?

Many of the artist's works feature hollow geometric shapes that create imaginary volumes. Observing the work “Cube,” how would you create some kind of volume in this piece? Sérvulo Esmeraldo

The work 'Convergence of Horizons,' by the São Paulo artist Amélia Toledo, places us in front of large identical metal plates positioned side by side, with the lower part oxidized and the upper part polished. Does the difference between the two states on the plates suggest some reflection?

The passage of time is marked by the materiality of the work, in this case, oxidation. This process occurs gradually over time: by presenting the oxidized plates, Amélia Toledo invites us to question material and time.
